Selah Carefarm is the first therapeutic carefarm of its kind in the United States—an innovative sanctuary where trauma-healing meets animal rescue, and where profound grief is met with compassion, dignity, and presence.
Set on 20 tranquil acres in Northern Arizona, Selah is home to over 50 formerly abused or neglected animals—horses, donkeys, goats, pigs, alpacas, cows, dogs, and cats—each of whom has survived cruelty or abandonment. These nonhuman animals (NHA) now live freely in a nurturing environment where they are safe, seen, and deeply cared for. But they are more than rescued: they become healers.
Here, bereaved individuals and families—especially those grieving the unimaginable loss of a child or loved one to violent or sudden death—come to experience a radically compassionate model of support. Without pressure, without pathology, without shame. Grief is not treated as a problem to be solved, but as a sacred experience to be honored.
At Selah, grieving humans are invited to tend to the NHA, walk among them, rest in their presence, and witness their stories of survival. This mutual connection—between those wounded by life —creates a powerful sense of shared understanding, one that fosters emotional regulation, connection, and hope. Research shows that this model measurably reduces grief intensity, improves mental health outcomes, and increases the capacity for compassion toward NHAs.
Funds are used to provide:
Medical care, food, and shelter for NHAs
Training programs for clinicians and caregivers
Research that is reshaping how we respond to suffering humans and nonhumans in the U.S.
At Selah, healing does not mean forgetting. It means learning to carry love and sorrow side by side. It means finding breath again, in the quiet company of another sentient being who has also known pain—and survived.
