May 23, 2023 (Mission, BC) – The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, awarded Accredited status to P.E.A.C.E. Farm Sanctuary as of May 17, 2023.

Accreditation signifies that P.E.A.C.E. Farm Sanctuary meets GFAS’ rigorous and peer-reviewed animal care standards which are confirmed by a comprehensive site visit. Accreditation also signifies adherence to standards addressing the sustainability of the organization, ethical principles, finances, staffing, education, outreach, security and safety and other operational aspects. The Accreditation status also provides a clear and trusted means for the public, donors, and grantors to recognize P.E.A.C.E. Farm Sanctuary as an exceptional organization.

“P.E.A.C.E. Farm Sanctuary’s Accreditation is a landmark moment” said Jessica Harris, MS, GFAS Farmed Animal Program Director. “They embody the sentiment that small can be mighty. This group has been steadfastly committed to best practices from day one- not just for their 9 current residents, but for all the future residents who will pass through their doors. They are proof positive that a sanctuary does not have to be big to make an outsized impact. Beyond the value of the loving care and lives saved of their own residents, P.E.A.C.E. works extensively to provide crucial services and resources to other sanctuaries in their region, while also doing education and outreach to widen their impact for animals. And while they do have plans to grow, their eye to sustainability and a strong foundation makes this microsanctuary’s future immensely bright . You don’t have to be big to do meaningful work for animals.”

“At P.E.A.C.E. we are so excited about our GFAS Accreditation, and extremely appreciative of the GFAS team for all their help, hard work, and continued support! The goal has always been to put down a strong foundation for our microsanctuary; GFAS has helped with that and more, supporting not just making sure we are following best practices with regards to the farm sanctuary’s operations, but also as an organization as a whole” says Sarien Slabbert, Executive Director at P.E.A.C.E..

She continues, “Our mission is helping farmed animals and farm sanctuaries through resources, rescue, and education, with a vision of a compassionate world for all sentient beings, supported by ethical veganism and sustainable farm sanctuaries. We were established in 2019 as a registered Canadian charity when we saw a need for an organization that specializes in farmed animal rescue, and we’ve since evolved to include many other programs, including but not limited to the microsanctuary in 2022.

We are excited to partner with the GFAS team to continue to grow and do the best for our farm sanctuary’s current and future residents, rescued individuals that come through our doors, farm sanctuaries we work with, and the public who support us.”
