Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue (SYCR) provides permanent sanctuary in a natural habitat environment for rescued chimpanzee orphans in the Republic of Cameroon while spearheading and supporting habitat protection, law enforcement and conservation education programs. Some of the 72 rescued chimpanzees at SYCR have been confiscated as infants from poachers and dealers, while others have suffered on chains or in small cages for decades before their rescue. At the sanctuary, their seven enclosure complexes each include a tract of lush forest protected by solar powered fencing. In this safe environment, injured and emotionally devastated chimpanzees can heal and eventually find friendship and joy in adoptive social groups.
