November 3, 2022 (Santa Clarita, CA) – The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, awarded Accredited status to The Gentle Barn Foundation as of September 22, 2022.

Accreditation signifies that The Gentle Barn meets GFAS’ rigorous and peer-reviewed animal care standards, which are confirmed by a comprehensive site visit. Accreditation also signifies adherence to standards addressing the sustainability of the organization, ethical principles, finances, staffing, education, outreach, security and safety and other operational aspects. The Accreditation status also provides a clear and trusted means for the public, donors, and grantors to recognize The Gentle Barn as an exceptional organization.

“We are delighted to announce the Accreditation of The Gentle Barn, a veteran organization in the sanctuary movement, and welcome them into the GFAS family,” said Jessica Harris, MS, GFAS Farmed Animal Program Director. “In working with The Gentle Barn, they have shown me two things: that they’re paying attention to the small details to ensure each resident’s life, wishes, and preferences are honored, and that they’ve got their eyes on the big picture, doing powerhouse outreach to forge those connections between human and non-human animals that are critical to ensuring a more compassionate future for ALL animals. Both are standout components of a true sanctuary. Their commitment to excellence is clear across the board, and we gladly support their high-impact work for farmed animals across the United States.”

“The Gentle Barn is proud to receive the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries Accreditation. Spending the time, over the past several months, working with GFAS to review The Gentle Barn’s practices, finances, and locations, this accreditation truly supports our goal of transparency and care for our animals and staff. Thank you, GFAS for your work in monitoring great nonprofits that serve the animal community at large” said Jay Weiner Co-Founder of The Gentle Barn.

She continues “We are excited for future opportunities to connect with additional donors and support through GFAS’s reach to help us continue our mission.”

About Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries
Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the sole purpose of strengthening and supporting the work of animal sanctuaries, rescues, and rehabilitation centers worldwide. The goal of GFAS in working with and assisting these animal care facilities is to ensure they are supported, honored, recognized, and rewarded for meeting important criteria in providing care to the animals in residence. GFAS was founded in 2007 by animal protection leaders from a number of different organizations in response to virtually unchecked and often hidden exploitation of animals for human entertainment and financial profit. The GFAS Board of Directors guides the organization’s work in a collaborative manner. While the board includes those in top leadership at The Humane Society of the United States, International Fund for Animal Welfare, and American Anti-Vivisection Society, all board members serve as individuals dedicated to animal sanctuaries. www.sanctuaryfederation.org.

About The Gentle Barn Foundation
The Gentle Barn is a national nonprofit organization, founded in 1999 as a farm animal sanctuary and place of recovery for severely abused animals and children. The Gentle Barn’s unique philosophy rehabilitates animals and connects their stories of survival and healing to the personal experiences of underserved, at-risk, and special needs children and adults who have suffered physical, mental, or emotional trauma. By interacting with The Gentle Barn’s 200 animals and taking a hands-on role in their welfare, those who participate in the programs at The Gentle Barn learn empathy, trust, forgiveness, and leadership. The mission statement at The Gentle Barn is simple: “Teaching people kindness and compassion to animals, each other, and our planet.”
