The Horse Shelter NM

August 3, 2017 (Cerrillos, NM) – The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, awarded Accredited status to The Horse Shelter as of August 1, 2017.

Accreditation signifies that The Horse Shelter meets GFAS’s rigorous and peer-reviewed equine care standards which are confirmed by a comprehensive site visit. Accreditation also signifies adherence to standards addressing the sustainability of the organization, ethical principles, finances, staffing, education outreach, security and safety and other operational aspects.

“We are proud to announce the recent Accreditation of The Horse Shelter,” said Valerie Taylor, GFAS Director of Accreditation – Equine. “The Horse Shelter is committed to providing rescue, rehabilitation, and re-training services to equines – a much needed service in their state.  The Horse Shelter also implements innovative business practices including hosting several fundraising events each year to ensure the organization’s sustainability, as well as a yearly horse trainers’ rally to help promote adoptions and growth of the organization for years to come.”

“The Horse Shelter Board, Staff and Volunteers are excited and very proud to receive the prestigious GFAS badge of Accreditation. We are honored to be the first GFAS Accredited horse rescue in New Mexico. Since our inception in 2000 we have been striving to improve, expand and grow our organization into a premier horse rescue, adoption facility, and sanctuary. We are very pleased to have our efforts validated by GFAS. “said Susan Hemmerle, Director of The Horse Shelter.

The GFAS Equine Accreditation Program is made possible by a generous grant from The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® and the Kenneth Scott Charitable Trust.

About Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the sole purpose of strengthening and supporting the work of animal sanctuaries, rescues, and rehabilitation centers worldwide. The goal of GFAS in working with and assisting these animal care facilities is to ensure they are supported, honored, recognized and rewarded for meeting important criteria in providing care to the animals in residence. GFAS was founded in 2007 by animal protection leaders from a number of different organizations in response to virtually unchecked and often hidden exploitation of animals for human entertainment and financial profit. The GFAS Board of Directors guides the organization’s work in a collaborative manner. While the board includes those in top leadership at The Humane Society of the United States, International Fund for Animal Welfare, and American Anti-Vivisection Society, all board members serve as individuals dedicated to animal sanctuaries. www.sanctuaryfederation.org.

About The Horse Shelter

The Horse Shelter was founded in 2000, is located in Cerrillos, NM on 300+ acres of beautiful high desert country, about 20 miles south of Santa Fe.  The mission of The Horse Shelter is to serve as a sanctuary for New Mexico’s abandoned, abused and neglected horses. Rescued horses are rehabilitated and adopted out whenever possible to homes that support their well-being and future long-term care.  Caring for between 70 and 80 horses in residence at any time, the organization continually needs support to feed, rehabilitate, train and find adoptive homes for the rescued horses. The more horses adopted into new homes, the more The Horse Shelter can rescue!
